Margaret Elizabeth (Gretchen) Weiland was born in Appleton October 4, 1887 and lived in the home at 925 Sixth (now 403 W. Sixth St. at the southwest corner of Sixth and Elm) from the time of her birth until her marriage to Charles F. Baldwin. Margaret and Charles made their home at the Baldwin family estate at 393 State (now 707 S. State St.) She was the daughter of Appleton pioneer Nicholas Weiland.
Her obituary appeared in the Appleton Post Crescent on Friday, July 18, 1975, p. 22:
Age 87, born October 4, 1887 in Appleton where she lived all her life. She died in her sleep at 5:45 a.m. Friday after a lengthy illness. She was affectionately know to her many friends as the "Queen of Berry Lake." She is survived by a son, Carl P. Baldwin of Appleton; 13 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles F. Baldwin, and her son, George N. Baldwin. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and had been active in church and community affairs. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Monday morning at St. Mary Catholic Church. Internment will be in St. Mary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brettschneider-Trettin Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Sunday. The rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Sunday evening at the funeral home. A memorial is being established.
