On the site of what is now 410 W. Prospect Ave. a home was built in the 1860's by pioneers John Smudde and his wife Anna. Anna ran a confectionary on the north side of College Ave., four blocks east of Walnut according to the 1887 city directory.
Several of the children maintained the family ice cream and candy business into the third generation.
