The Queen Anne style home at 412-416 W. Fifth St. built in 1893 once belonged to Matthias and Mary Schmidt. Matthias emigrated from Germany in 1868 and lived on this property from the early 1870's. Matthias Schmidt and his wife Mary purchased the property at 404 W. Prospect Ave. in 1910 for rental income and as their retirement home.

The May 17, 1928 Appleton Post Crescent ran an article about the 52nd wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schuetter. It mentioned the guests at the celebration who had also celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries. Among them was Mr. and Mrs. Matt[ias] Schmidt.
