Helen Lois Phinney Sloan


Helen Lois Phinney Sloan was born in Wisconsin November 19, 1848. Her father was Professor James M. Phinney who taught mathematics at Lawrence University when it began classes in 1849.

She married attorney Henry Clay Sloan November 19, 1879 in Appleton. Henry died in 1915. She lived at 528 W. Fifth St. from 1925-1930. In her later years she became active in philanthropic and civic causes.

She died in 1938. Her obituary appeared on the first page of the October 5, 1938 Appleton Post-Crescent. The paper reported on October 14, 1938 that her will stipulated that Lawrence College, as it was then known, should receive $10,000 to be used for loans for junior and senior men.
