Cyrus Moran Jackman was born in Ira Township, Rutland, Vermont on January 13, 1808 to Moses and Rhoda Jackman. In the 1840 New York census he and his wife and 5 children were living in Yorkshire, Cattaraugus County. He appears in the 1850 Grand Chute census as a tavern keeper, along with his wife Caroline and five children: Mary, Emerit, Rhoda, Alice and Wesley.
The family still lived in Grand Chute in 1855. By 1860 Cyrus, a day laborer, Caroline, Frances Ella (age 7) and Wesley were living in Ward 1 in Oshkosh. Here they remained until at least 1870. Cyrus is listed in the 1869 Oshkosh city directory as a watchman.

The 1880 census shows Cyrus living with his daughter Mary A. Seaman and her family in Arcade, Wyoming County, New York. He died in 1892 and is buried in Union Cemetery, Livonia, Livingston County, New York.
The 1853 publication, the Wisconsin Gazetteer listed 5 hotels in Appleton (in the town of Grand Chute.) According to an article in the December 17, 1930 Post-Crescent, Jackman owned the first hotel in the village of Grand Chute, the Grand Chute house. Another article in the March 17, 1968 Post-Crescent says that the boarding-house type hotel was probably at the top of Jackman St.
In the April 30, 1932 issue of the Post-Crescent, historian Lillian Mackesy states: "The Grand Chute house was built on the Grand Chute plat in 1850 by Cyrus Jackman. This hotel was a large one which stood on the present Memorial-dr toward the river, but was burned to the ground three years after its erection."
