In 1884 Andreas Kuhn, tailor, farmer and Civil War veteran, purchased the houses at 414-416 S. State St. for retirement income. Shortly before his death at the Milwaukee Solders' Home in 1902 Kuhn deeded the two dwellings to separate individuals.
