James and Sarah Pierce Tompkins, owners of the Tompkins house at 523 S. State St. had this vernacular cottage built in 1884 when their Fifth and State residence became too big for them in their retirement. A domestic, Clara Sagee, also lived here in 1896.
In 1898 the home was purchased by Fox River Paper Co. millwright Maurice Boland. Archie F. Kapp lived here in 1925.
